Burnham-On-Sea
residents to hold alternative Olympics on Sunday
Residents
in Burnham-On-Sea will be holding an alternative Olympics on Sunday
(August 19th) - and there's still time to sign-up to join in.
Residents
of The Grove, Malborough Court and Gardenhurst are organising
the fun-packed event and have invited teams to enter from outside
of the three streets.
Mandi
Stewart, part of the organising team, told Burnham-On-Sea.com:
"We are organising a day-long festival of sports - not all
running, jumping and throwing things, to get the community together,
encourage them to be more active and celebrate The Olympic Games
on Sunday from 2pm."
'The Three Streets' is a small community group behind the event,
which will include old favourites such as welly wanging, a tug-of-war
and modern interpretations of Olympic sports such as tent-athlon
and rowing (putting a tent up against the clock and how long can
a couple keep an agreement going for).
The
opening ceremony will be held at 2pm and will be led by Monarchs
Aerobic Sport Gymnastic squad and will also feature local Olympic
Torch Bearer Sarah Milner Simonds.
There will be a medal ceremony at 7pm with medals presented by
Mayor Ken Smout, which will be followed by fireworks and an outdoor
karaoke.
The
evening will end with a grill-a-thon with barbecues being lit
along the street with a Taste of Rio as the food theme. Spectators
will be very welcome.
"To
take part, you will need a team of ten. If you are less than ten
let us know and we will match you up with others. You also need
at least one of your team to be be under 10 and one over 50. There
will be a wet round and a couple of your team need to be competent
swimmers and be in swimwear. Bring a picnic along for the afternoon
and share a barbecue grill in the evening."
To
take part, pre-register by emailing thethreestreets@gmail.com
or call 07973 378735.
