Torrential rain prompts Met Office weather alert for Burnham today

A severe weather warning remains in place as torrential rain sweeps across the Burnham-On-Sea area today (Thursday).

A Met Office yellow warning has been issued for the entire region until 3pm this afternoon.

Forecasters say up to 40mm of rain could fall, although some areas could see up to 60mm in some parts of the south west.

Chief Forecaster Andy Page said: "An active frontal system is expected to move eastwards across the UK over the next couple of days bringing rain to all parts of Britain."

"The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings which means that the public should plan ahead to take account of possible travel delays or disruption to their day to day activities."

The Environment Agency's Head of Flood Incident Management, Craig Woolhouse, added: "Our teams have been out around the clock to minimise the risks and prepare for flooding."

"We urge people to keep up to date with the weather forecast and remain prepared for flooding in their area by signing up to receive free flood warnings and staying away from dangerous flood water."

A weather warning has also been issued for Saturday as another period of heavy rain, accompanied by strong winds, is due to sweep through the region.

The Met Office says another 30mm of rain may fall on already saturated ground, bringing an additional risk of flooding and travel disruption.
