Burnham-On-Sea rugby youngsters celebrate tournament victory

-

Burnham-On-Sea Rugby Club’s Under 12s team have been celebrating a regional tournament.

The team travelled to Yeovil’s Ivel Barbarians to take part in their 2012 Festival of Rugby Tournament, competing against seven other quality teams from as far afield as Dorchester, Sherbourne, Wareham and Wellington.

Despite having the smallest squad of boys in the competition and including four boys playing up a year from the Under 11s, Burnham still managed to win every one of their matches, conceding only two tries – emerging as festival winners.

“This was truly a fantastic squad achievement and every player gave 110% to the cause by winning all their pool matches, playing exciting powerful running rugby to beat three very strong sides – Wellington 10-0, Castle Cary 25-0 and Swanage & Wareham, who had some very big boys, 25-10,” said Head Coach Nigel White.

“Next up in the semi final were the runners up from pool A, Sherbourne. In a very closely contested game, Burnham eased into the final 10-0. A well organised Dorchester, winners of the other semi-final, were the opponents in the final. During a game where both teams were evenly matched, Burnham gained the upper hand. The whole team defended and tackled courageously to keep Dorchester from crossing their try line and finish as the tournament’s winners.”

“Individuals who performed particularly well were Yiannis, Samuel Everett, Sam and Simon Elrick, Dan Curry and George Goodall, but man of the tournament was undoubtedly Manu who played with power, pace and skill and showed what a truly exciting prospect he is for the future.”

Nigel added that the team went into the tournament unbeaten all season and this was their chance to prove how good a team they are. “The whole team rose to the challenge by playing some fantastic rugby to win the trophy,” he concluded.
