Swan rescued by wildlife carers after landing on metal fence spikes

This swan was rescued by wildlife carers in Highbridge this week after injuring itself when it landed on the metal spikes of a security fence.

East Huntspill's Secret World was called to help the bird - the charity's first casualty of 2012 - when it struck the fence and needed emergency treatment.

"The bird misjudged its descent and tore its breast on the security spikes of a fence as it came into land in a yard in Highbridge," a spokeswoman told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

"Luckily, he was noticed by an animal lover who, realising that he had not moved from the spot where he had landed, raised the alarm."

The swan - which has been named Spike - required several stitches to his injuries and is now making a good recovery at the East Huntspill charity. The bird is expected to be released back into the wild over the next few weeks.
