Burnham-On-Sea awaits Mary Portas £1m bid announcement in May

-

Burnham-On-Sea’s Town Team hopes to find out in late May whether their bid for a £1m share of Mary Portas funding to regenerate the town centre has been successful.

Burnham’s bid, which was submitted last month, outlines how £99,000 of funding would meet a ‘vision’ of modernising Burnham’s town centre.

At a meeting of the Town Team on Tuesday (April 24th), several new working groups were formed to begin taking forward a number of initiatives ahead of the announcement.

“Our newly-formed groups are starting to look at how we can boost trade and attract new business, re-brand Burnham as a shopping destination, introduce more creativity to the town centre, and also encourage a cafe culture,” the Town Team’s Bev Milner-Simonds told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“We are still welcoming newcomers, who can bring their bright ideas and contributions to us directly or by coming along at our next meeting.”

The next meeting of the Town Team will be held on May 29th at 6.30pm at Burnham Football Club in Cassis Close.

The £1m fund, made up of government cash, is one of a series of ideas put forward by shopping guru Mary Portas in an effort to halt the decline of British high streets as shoppers head to out-of-town superstores and increasingly shop online.
