Wet weather causes disruption across the Burnham-On-Sea area
Heavy
rain has caused disruption across the Burnham-On-Sea area this
weekend, flooding roads and causing several events to be cancelled.
The
annual Sedgemoor Vintage Vehicle Show, which was due to take place
this weekend at Highbridge's Isleport Farm, was cancelled on Saturday
due to flooding.
Dozens
of vintage tractors and other vehicles were due to go on display
for the two-day event, but the fields at the farm were turned
into a quagmire by hours of rain, leading to the event being called
off, as reported here.
Several
low-lying roads on the Levels were also partially blocked by flood
water. One road, pictured above, was White House Lane near Rooksbridge
where flood water covered the road.
A
flood alert for the River Brue was in force by the Environment
Agency throughout Saturday, with some concern that it may top
the banks in certain vulnerable places.
The
bad weather also led to Friday night's speedway fixture between
the Somerset Rebels and Sheffield Tigers to be called off at the
Oaktree Arena in Highbridge.
"Heavy
rainfall close to the start of the meeting left the track in an
unfit state to begin racing, and despite some hard work by the
track staff, following an inspection and discussion between both
teams and the referee, there was no alternative but to call the
meeting off," Rebels spokesman Dave Thompson told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
Meanwhile,
visitors to the Healing
Weekend taking place at Secret World in East Huntspill waded
through mud at the event on Saturday, as pictured above. Several
cars also had to be towed out of the car parks at the end of the
day.
Organisers
of Burnham's Picnic In The Park on Sunday say the event is going
ahead as planned - more here.
