Movie stars on Berrow beach for filming of new BBC1 wartime drama

-

BBC film crews were on Berrow beach on Wednesday (October 23rd) to shoot new scenes for a major BBC1 wartime drama.

The six-part series is due to be broadcast next year and will focus on the lives of medical staff working in a tented field hospital behind the trenches in France during World War I.

The series features a line-up of well-known stars including Oona Chaplin (The Hour, Game of Thrones and Quantum Of Solace), Hermione Norris (Spooks, Cold Feet), Suranne Jones (Scott And Bailey, The Secret Of Crickley Hall), Kevin Doyle (Downton Abbey, Scott And Bailey) and Kerry Fox (Shallow Grave, An Angel At My Table).

The series is part of the BBC’s programming to mark a centenary since the conflict. Scenes were shot on Berrow beach in September and again this week.

Sedgemoor District Council’s Property Manager, Tim Mander, who set up the filming agreement, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It’s great that the BBC have been back to Berrow Beach this week to film such a prestigious production and this demonstrates once more Sedgemoor’s reputation as a ‘film friendly council’.”

Speaking at the BBC’s recent media launch of the show, Hermione Norris said: “It’s a privilege to be involved in this BBC production 100 years on, bringing the drama of World War I into the hearts and minds of this generation. Lest we forget.”

Suranne Jones added: “It’s an important period in history, not just because of the war but because it was a transitional period for women, liberated in some respect but still shackled by the conventions and hierarchies of the past.”
