Police in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge are marking National Bike Week by stepping up their efforts to beat bike thieves.

Officers will be out and about at main cycle routes and schools in the area.

They will be speaking to cyclists about keeping their bikes secure, riding safely and legally, as well as checking over any potentially stolen bikes.

A police spokesman said: “Last year, more than 4,500 bikes were reported stolen in Avon and Somerset.”

“We’ve done a lot of work over the past couple of years to educate both cyclists about the need to invest in decent locks that reflect the value of their bikes, and the public about the need to work with us by reporting crimes.”

Bike Week, the UK’s biggest mass participation cycling event, takes place between 15th-23rd June 2013.
