Mayor announces special award for BMX world champion Liam Phillips

-

Burnham-On-Sea BMX star Liam Phillips was given a special award during the town’s annual Civic Service on Sunday (September 8th).

Burnham Mayor Cllr Martin Cox announced that Liam, who became the BMX World Champion earlier this year, would receive a ‘Mayor’s Special Award’.

Since the sportsman is currently training overseas in California, his proud parents Sharon and Pete Phillips, pictured, collected the award on his behalf.

The Mayor said: “Burnham and Highbridge residents are all very proud of the achievements of Liam who, on July 28th, produced a sensational performance in Auckland, New Zealand and became BMX champion of the world.”

“Liam was raised in Burnham and went to Berrow School, followed by King Alfred School. Both of his parents were involved in BMX and Liam’s father, a former natioknal coach, helped to set up Burnham’s BMX Club and their facilities at Apex Park with the co-operation of Sedgemoor District Council.”

“Liam has been a member of Burnham BMX Club since the age of four and this performance was the pinnacle of his achievements in his continuing sporting career. We wish him all good fortune in his chosen sport, wherever in the world that takes him.”

At Sunday’s service, four local residents were also presented with community awards, as featured here.
