Cost of Burnham-On-Sea’s seafront fireworks display soars to £11,000

-

The cost of holding this year’s Burnham-On-Sea seafront fireworks display is set to soar to £11,000, it has emerged this week as organisers begin a search for sponsors.

Town councillors were told at a meeting that the cost of organising the seafront spectacle on November 3rd will be around £2,000 higher than last year.

“There is £7,500 in our budget and some money set aside in earmarked reserves, but with our finances being constantly squeezed, support from local businesses will be important,” said Town Clerk Denise Emery.

Large crowds of up to 10,000 spectators often line The Esplanade to watch the 20-minute display on the night before the Burnham Carnival.

“The Town Council believes this event is an important attraction which encourages visitors to spend more time in our town which, in turn, can only be of benefit to local traders.”

Burnham councillor Dennis Davey has taken on the role of approaching local businesses for funding to enable the display to go ahead as planned.

A high tide on the night of this year’s display is likely to require a temporary platform to be built on the jetty from which to launch the fireworks, adding to the costs.
