Berrow woman receives freedom of Gloucester in civic ceremony

-

A Berrow woman and her sister were sworn in on Monday (October 7th) as free women of the City Of Gloucester in a special civic ceremony.

Sharon Hines and her sister Deborah Moore, received the hereditary freedom of the city which is passed down through generations of their family.

They both originally lived in Gloucester, where their father was born and grew up, before they moved to Burnham-On-Sea through their father’s job.

The ladies swore their ‘oath of allegiance’ to the Mayor of Gloucester, Cllr Chris Chatterton, in the company of the Deputy Mayor and Sheriff, the President and Honorary Secretary of the Chartered Freemen and Free Women of the City of Gloucester.

Sharon told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It has been passed through our family since the early 1700’s, normally from father to son when reaching the age of 21, and has only recently been extended to the daughters, and so we feel very honored that this has been bestowed on us.”

Sharon and Deborah were joined by ten other claimants who also became entitled to the role through their hereditary line.
