Burnham-On-Sea’s MP praises community spirit at harvest homes

-

Burnham-On-Sea’s MP has praised the community spirit on show at Harvest Homes across the area this month.

Tessa Munt’s comments come after she attended the traditional events in Mark, East Brent and Wedmore.

In East Brent, she helped served drinks before heading up to the top table to respond to the ‘visitors and helpers’.

Tessa said: “To anybody uninitiated into the ways of Somerset Harvest Homes there are many old traditions about who thanks, responds and toasts who at what stage and what time.”

“The traditions are part of what makes the harvest homes special. A unique tradition at East Brent is the parading and slicing of the cheese followed by the throwing of some of this cheese to the waiters.”

“The waiter who catches the largest piece earns a prize, luckily not always a piece of cheese.”

“It is ceremonies like these that create community, help to bring people together whether they can date their family back to the 14th Century in the village or if they moved in last week. The Harvest Homes make Somerset special.”
