An afternoon of medieval-themed hobby horse jousting on Burnham-On-Sea beach raised over £450 for a care centre in the town on Sunday (August 11th).

A crowd of spectators watched the unique event next to the Pavilion, which was held in aid of Burnham Care Centre in College Street.

The afternoon started with the arrival of a group of colourfully-dressed knights and pages, followed by the arrival of a ‘royal party’, led by King Dave Ilsley, before the jousting got underway.

The hobby horse jousters charged at each other several times with lances before a winner was declared.

Several stalls were also set up on Esplanade pavement, selling crafts and merchandise.

Organiser Gaynor Brown said she had been happy with how the event had gone.

She told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We raised £457.28 which for the first year was great. We had a good turnout of spectators, boosted by the sunny weather, and a fun afternoon was enjoyed.”

She added that next summer’s event is already being planned to include several historical-themed participation sports, including archery.
