A group of pupils from Highbridge’s King Alfred School were celebrating yesterday (Sunday) after success at a regional athletics event.

Students from Year 7 achieved individual and team success at the South West Regional Schools Biathle Championship, held at Leweston School in Sherborne, Dorset.

Biathle sees the young athletes completing a timed 500 metre run and a 50-metre swim followed by another 500 metre run – demanding high levels of stamina and fitness.

Individual places at the end of the race provided points towards the team total and with the King Alfred school pupils securing 1st (Elizabeth Tolley), 3rd (Ella Dollwery) and 4th (Rebecca Mercer) in a very competitive, gruelling race, they in fact scored the best team total of all age and gender categories for the whole day.

Competitiors came from across the region to take part and the standard was very high despite the blustery and wet weather conditions.

Students from St Andrews VC school also participated and performed well with Anya Snowball of Year 4 coming second in her race and Catherine Tolley finishing third in the girls Year 6 race.

Parents Jo Snowball and Sandra Smithers surprised themselves – but not the vocal travelling support – with outstanding runs and swims in the parents/teachers competition, securing second and third places respctively in the senior ladies race.
