Lifeboats rescue three kayakers from waters off Brean Down

Three kayakers were rescued by lifeboat crews yesterday evening (Sunday) after getting into difficulty several miles out into the Bristol Channel from Brean beach.

The trio, pictured right, from Bristol, had headed out into the channel to do some fishing off Brean Down but got into difficulty.

"One kayak filled with water and then turned over, and I was left clinging onto it in the sea for about 30 minutes," Ivor Bennett told

"I managed to get one of my friends was able to come and help me, but the offshore wind and strong currents made things difficult."

A beach warden at Brean who had been monitoring them through his binoculars raised the alarm by contacting Coastguards.

Two lifeboats from Weston were called to rescue the trio and bring them back to the beach at Brean.

A team of Burnham Coastguards was also called to the beach to help them back onto the shore, check their condition and retrieve their kayaks.

"This incident could have been very serious - they were fortunate to have been spotted by the beachwarden and to be rescued by the lifeboats," said a Coastguard spokesman.
