Berrow Kung Fu group celebrates success at national championships

Six young kung fu enthusiasts from the Burnham-On-Sea area have been competing at the UK’s national championships over the past week.

The youngsters – all of whom are members of Berrow’s Kung Fu Club – attended the Fei Lung Kwan National Junior Championships in Horton, Berkshire.

They competed against other participants from across the UK, including Berkshire, Buckingham, Middlesex and East Sussex.

“It was a highly spirited event where participants were assessed on exercises, stretching, Chinese vocabulary, form work – a series of defensive and attacking moves – and sparring,” the club’s leader Patrick Barber told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“The club did exceptionally well, with all six students winning their individual age categories.”

Local winners includesd In the age group ‘8 and under’, first place to Faith Hooper, second to Drew Seabourne and third Andreas Laoutaris. In the age group ‘9 – 11′, first place went to Jacob Nelson and in the ’12-15’ category, Sophie Butt was first and Chloe Reynolds second.

Sophie Butt also won the overall championship with the highest score of the day and Jacob Nelson won ‘The Most Impressive on the Day’ due to the high overall score achieved by a ten-year old.

The students and their families stayed overnight at a local Travelodge Hotel thanks to Burnham Lions Club and went to Thorpe Park the next day where everyone had a most enjoyable time!
