Indoor kurling group to launch in Burnham-On-Sea this week

The brand new sport of indoor kurling comes to Burnham-On-Sea this week when a new group holds its first sessions.

The first of the weekly sessions will be held in The Princess Theatre from this Thursday (3rd October), meeting from 12 noon - 3pm and weekly thereafter.

"Indoor kurling is simple to play and is suitable for most ages and abilities, including wheelchair users or people who have difficulty standing. There's no ice involved and you can play while sitting," organiser Brian Saunders told

"It's a fun activity, so we hope lots of people will come along, meet new friends and have a go."

"It's a new sport that is quickly growing in popularity. When I saw it, I immediately thought it was be great to bring it to Burnham."

"Because the kurling stones are on wheels and controlled by sticks, there's no need for ice and it is great fun. If it's successful, I would like to take the sport into local schools to expand the interest further."

Somerset County Council has provided a grant of £1,000 to the group via its health and wellbeing budget.

Cllr Peter Burridge-Clayton, who presented the grant, said: "It's great that the council is able to support such a healthy activity that will benefit local people of all ages and abilities."

A three hour session costs only £1.50 per person. For further information contact Brian Saunders on 769461.
