Dozens flock to watch traditional May Day event at Burnham-On-Sea

Bright sunshine brought dozens of people to Burnham's Marine Cove on Bank Holiday Monday (6th May) for a traditional May Day event.

St Joseph's School dancers performed a May Pole country dance in the seafront gardens, as pictured, while children who came dressed up as fairies and elves took part in a colourful parade.

Chairman of Sedgemoor District Council Councillor Gill Slocombe opened the event, which was also attended by the town’s Mayor Ken Smout. The May Queen, Emma Orledge, was crowned in front of many onlookers before leading the parade.

The event was organised by The Friends of Marine Cove and Sedgemoor District Council. Community gardener Jacqui Strong told "It was a great event - we had superb weather and it was fantastic to see everyone enjoying themselves and having a great time."

The event also included the formal announcement of Burnham's new Town Crier, as reported here.
