Tackling drugs has this week been voted as the top priority for Highbridge police over the next three months.

At the quarterly ‘Have Your Say’ meeting last night (Thursday, April 18th), residents picked the concerns they feel need the most attention.

Anti-social behaviour and parking issues were discussed – but the continuing crackdown on drug dealing was chosen as the sole priority.

Sgt Ian Kennett said police would “keep up the pressure on those that deal with drugs in the town for as long as the community wants.”

During the meeting, he outlined several of the police’s recent successes in tackling drug crime since the start of the year.

These include two cannabis cultivation set-ups at houses in Bristol Road, Highbridge where over 40 plants have been seized and two arrests made.

A large cocaine seizure was also made on Highbridge’s Poplar Estate recently and the offender is being charged with a dealing offence in late April.

A cannabis warrant at a property in West Huntspill also led to a search of an address at Highbridge Quay where cannabis was seized and two men summonsed.

During last month’s Sedgemoor ‘Day Of Action’, eight premises were also searched in Burnham and Highbridge and seven offenders were identified. Other seizures have been been made in Mark, Berrow and Axbridge.

Sgt Kennett adedd that 21 other seizures have been made during stop checks and intelligence since February 1st.
