Weather warning issued for the Burnham-On-Sea area today

-

The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning for the Burnham-On-Sea area today (Friday) as heavy rain raises the risk of flooding.

A yellow warning is in place as bands of rain, accompanied by strong winds, will sweep through the region.

“The rain will be pushing northeastwards during Friday and their progress will be slowed up by a blocking area of high pressure located northeast of the UK,” said a Met Office spokesman.

“This will result in the associated rain-bearing systems becoming slow-moving over southwestern parts of England, leading to heavy and, at times, prolonged rainfall.”

Southeasterly winds will also increase to reach gale force around coasts, it has warned.

Both the Met Office and Environment Agency have urged the public to be prepared for the possibility of flooding.

Environment Agency spokesman Pete Fox said: “Heavy rain in the South West means there is a risk of localised surface water and river flooding.”
