Pub demolition plans draw objections from West Huntspill residents

-

Proposals to demolish a once-popular pub on the outskirts of Highbridge and replace it with five new homes have been opposed by a group of nearby residents.

The Royal Artillery Arms in West Huntspill’s Alstone Lane shut last year after struggling to survive during the financial downturn.

As first reported here, the pub’s owner is seeking full planning permission to demolish the building and build a small development of new homes in its place.

Public consultation on the scheme ended last week and Sedgemoor District Council’s planning team is now considering the feedback ahead of a decision shortly.

Several residents have sent letters of objection, claiming the proposed development would be ‘out of keeping’ with surrounding properties and could create access concerns. They have also cited the loss of a public amenity.

The Environment Agency has also objected, stating that inadequate flood protection plans are in place.
