A total of 35 children have been injured near schools in the Burnham-On-Sea area over the past six years, according to a new study.

An online service launched this week by insurance company AXA lists the most dangerous areas for child pedestrians.

According to the statistics, from 2006-2011, there were 211 collisions near schools in the Burnham-On-Sea area.

Among the most dangerous roads listed on the company’s road safety index were those near St Andrew’s School, which saw 57 collisions and 9 child casualties, and St Joseph’s School, which saw 46 collisions and 9 child casualties.

AXA says it has designed the service to give residents, parents, schools and local governments a better understanding of their immediate area.

However, it admits that the figures take into account all incidents, regardless of whether they were in school term times or not. It also says the child casualty numbers do not necessarily refer to children who belong to that particular school, since they could be residents or children passing through the area.

But James Barclay of AXA said: “Child road safety is of paramount importance to everyone in Britain so the more that can be done to understand the facts, and therefore adapt infrastructure or education methods, the better.”

Dan Campsall, director of Road Safety Analysis, added: “The data can be used to support changes in local road safety education as well as the road environment, therefore helping to further safeguard pupils across the country.”

A spokesman added: “When considering the index, the statistics have been generated using Official Government statistics from the Department for Transport for 2006-2011 by analysing the roads that are located within the 500 metre radius around each British school. Figures take into account all incidents regardless of whether they were in school term times or not. They also incorporate both child and adult casualties. The child casualty numbers do not necessarily refer to children who belong to that particular school, as they could be residents or children passing through the area.”
