Burnham-On-Sea residents are making final preparations for the arrival of a big storm in the early hours of Monday morning which looks set to bring damaging 80mph winds.
The storm is set to hit the Burnham area in the early hours according to the latest information from the Met Office, pictured above.
Residents have been ‘battening down the hatches’ by securing vulnerable property such as fences, sheds and greenhouses while Burnham Sailing Club members have been preparing for the stormy conditions.
Rod Southwell, pictured, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “There is a risk that boats will slip their lines in the high winds and rough sea conditions, so we’ve been checking all the mooring lines this weekend and trying to ensure that everything is secure.”
“Fortunately, the tide will not be high when the worst of the weather hits us early on Monday, so the main risk is around wind damage.”
Another Burnham boat owner, Pete Wright, told us: “I expect the weather to be far calmer than the forecasters are predicting but I’ve moved my motor cruiser up the river into a more sheltered area away from the pontoons as a precaution.”
The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for the south west, including the Burnham-On-Sea area, as heavy rain and strong winds are expected to batter the region from late on Sunday, accompanied by strengthening winds.
“This could bring gusts of 60-80mph quite widely across the southern half of the UK, with gusts of more than 80mph possible in places – especially on exposed coasts,” said a spokesman. “Winds of this strength could bring down trees or cause structural damage, potentially causing transport disruption or power cuts.”
