Torrential rain and high winds caused difficult driving conditions in the Burnham-On-Sea area on Monday and into the early hours of today (Tuesday).

Burnham firefighters were called to deal with an unsafe structure in Burnham Road, Highbridge as 60mph gusts swept through the area.

And fire crews were also called to Victoria Court in Burnham at 10am on Christmas Eve morning to remove pieces of a chimney stack in a dangerous position.

Heavy rainfall and high winds battered the region, prompting the Met Office to issue an amber warning. Furrther bad weather is forecast for this Friday.

Earlier on Monday, police were called to several blown down trees, including one in Brent Knoll’s Burton Row (pictured top) which was blocking the road. Local resident Michael Hookway said police and residents worked together to get the road cleared.

The storm left pools of rainwater on roads in Burnham, but no serious flooding. The South Esplanade was partially covered with water, as pictured below, while a terrace near Abingdon Street, right, was also left under several inches of water. In Highbridge, the River Brue overflowed onto the recently-opened footpath.

More bad weather is forecast for later in the week on Friday.
