Overnight gales and heavy rain raise flood threat in Burnham area

Scenes like these in Highbridge earlier this week when the River Brue overflowed could be repeated again today (Friday) following more overnight heavy rain.

Gales swept through the Burnham-On-Sea area in the early hours, prompting a fresh warning of possible flooding from the Environment Agency.

The latest rainfall comes just days after the River Brue overflowed onto the recently-opened walkway and gardens, pictured.

The Burnham area has, however, managed to avoid the damaging flooding seen elswehere in Somerset this week.

The Environment Agency issued new flood warnings across the South West last night and urged people to take care, particularly around low-lying areas such as the Somerset Levels.

Met Office chief forecaster Eddy Carroll, said: "Another Atlantic depression will bring a further spell of wet and windy weather to the UK. Rain falling on to saturated ground brings the risk of further flooding."
