Schools in Burnham-On-Sea area to be disrupted by teachers strike

Several schools in the Burnham-On-Sea area will be partially closed this week when teachers hold a one day strike.

Several schools in the Burnham area have sent letters to parents warning them to expect disruption this Thursday October 17th.

Burnham Infants School will be partially open on the 17th October. It will be open for Turtle, Dolphin, Seal and Kittiwake classes.

King Alfred School in Highbridge will be closed to students in Years 7 -11. Andy Owen, head teacher at King Alfred School, says: "Whilst all efforts are being made to maintain essential services to children and young people, regrettably the industrial action will mean that the school will not be open as usual to students in Years 7 -11."

"This action is not against the school itself but is part of industrial action organised by these trade unions. Having conducted a risk assessment and having consulted with the Governing Body I regret that the school will be closed to students in Years 7–11. The school will be open for Year 12 and Year 13."

The strike has been called over pay, pensions and working conditions by the National Union of Teachers and National Association of Schoolmasters and the Union of Woman Teachers.
