The dangers of discarded fishing tackle causing injuries to wildlife were starkly illustrated last night (Wednesday) when an injured swan was rescued at Highbridge’s Apex Park.

Wildlife carers from East Huntspill’s Secret World were called to the park at 5.30pm when a walker spotted the bloodied bird struggling on the lake.

Crewmembers from Burnham’s rescue charity BARB helped the carers reach the bird using an inshore rescue boat, as pictured.

Secret World’s Lynn Armfield and Greg Kelloway, pictured top, then took the injured bird away for treatment and believed it was likely that fishing tackle was to blame.

Lynn told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The swan was losing blood rapidly, so a quick response was really important. We hate to see animals struggling like this.”
