36-hour sponsored swim planned by Burnham-On-Sea swimmer

-

A Burnham-On-Sea swimmer is to take part in a 36-hour sponsored swim to raise money for two good causes.

Greg Kyd, right, and Rich Hill will be holding their marathon swim on 29th May for Cancer Research UK and Somerset Rural Youth Project.

The guys will swim alternately for 36 hours with stints being kept short so that they are able to rehydrate and keep up their pace to meet their target of swimming 100,000 metres, which is the same as three times across the English Channel.

Greg and Rich have been friends since first competing together at Bridgwater Swimming Club more than 15 years ago and still holding a number of club records between them.

Greg, who is a member of Burnham Swimming Club, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The event will be pretty tough but we’ve been trying to think up a challenge for a while and this seemed fitting.”

“There will be huge fatigue with it being tricky to keep energy levels up, particularly as there will be no opportunities to sleep and eating properly will be impossible.”

“The sleep deprivation will only odd to the need for mental strength as they push through fatigue and ‘lane fever’ from the repetitive nature of 36 hours of lane swimming.”

The lads have started their fundraising and have had a positive response from friends and businesses and are asking for more people to get involved via Facebook and their fundraising page here.
