A Burnham-On-Sea supermarket has unveiled plans to build a new permanent car wash outside its store, raising fears among some nearby residents about extra noise.

Burnham’s Tesco store in Ben Travers Way has submitted a planning application to Sedgemoor District Council outlining its plans to convert nine car parking spaces into the permanent hand car wash facility with a screened wet wash area, office and canopy.

Sedgemoor District Council’s Environment Health Officer Ray Fox has recommended that a number of ‘mitigation measures’ are introduced to protect local residents from noise and night-time light pollution.

Opening hours will be limited to 8am-7pm on weekdays and Saturdays, and 10am-5pm on Sundays, although Sedgemoor is suggesting the Sunday opening be contained to 10am-4pm, the same as the store.

Tesco says the proposed car wash would be sited on the north side of the car park, adjacent to the Rosewood pub, and that it would generate four full-time and four part-time jobs.

Sedgemoor District Council’s planning department is welcoming feedback on the scheme – application number 11/13/00114 – as part of its consultation period which runs until 29/11/2013.
