Burnham-On-Sea’s MP says proposals to give members of parliament a nine per cent pay rise are “ludicrous and out of touch.”
Tessa Munt has this week spoken out after national media reports that the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) is considering the huge pay hike.
The MP told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “This suggestion is ludicrous. It would be totally out of touch with reality when pay is frozen across the board.”
“If I had the chance to vote against it I would, but IPSA makes the rules on pay, not MPs.”
“There will be a consultation on the proposals starting this week, and I would urge everyone to make their views known.”
MPs are currently paid £66,396, but that is due to rise to £67,060 in April 2014 and rise by a further 1% the following year.
The recommendation amounts to a rise of around £6,300 a year, or 9.3%, on what MPs would be getting in 2015.
Any suggested increase would follow the completion of a review into MPs’ pay and conditions by IPSA.
