Thunderstorms sweep through Burnham-On-Sea area after heatwave

-

Electric storms swept through the Burnham-On-Sea area overnight as the heatwave came to an end.

Burnham saw thunder and lightning in the early hours from 3am as the storms passed through.

The Met Office warned of further storms across the South West after nearly three weeks of hot weather.

Forecasters predicted long spells of thundery rain with some torrential downpours in places, with rain totals of up to 50mm in three hours in the worst hit areas.

A spokesman said: “An area of low pressure is expected to increasingly interact with the plume of hot, humid air resident across southern Britain.”

“Whilst preceding days will have seen relatively isolated thunderstorms, the developing set-up on Tuesday and Wednesday provides the ingredients for more widespread and energetic storms.”

“Large rainfall totals onto hard-baked ground may lead to flooding locally with hail and gusty winds an additional possibility.”
