Safety warning issued after car gets stranded by incoming tide at Brean

A fresh safety warning has been issued to motorists to check tide times before driving onto beaches in the Burnham-On-Sea area after the driver of this car got caught out on Saturday evening (July 20th).

A Vauxhall Corsa parked on Brean beach became inundated by the incoming tide shortly after 5pm when its owner had walked onto Brean Down for a picnic.

The beach warden and a crew from Burnham-based rescue charity BARB were called to the scene to ensure no-one was stuck inside or was putting themselves at risk trying to reach the vehicle.

A BARB spokesman said: "We always advise motorists to check the tide times before driving onto our local beaches and to heed warning signs and not take unnecessary risks. We have a wonderful coastline that can be safely enjoyed by holidaymakers and locals alike if used sensibly."

The car's owner, Andy Laird, 19, from Walsall in the West Midlands, told "I was up on the Down enjoying a picnic and forgot about the tide coming in. It was a shock to come back and find the car had been surrounded by the sea. I am grateful to BARB and the beach warden's help."
