Search for new town crier in Burnham-On-Sea gets underway

-

The search for a new Burnham-On-Sea town crier has been launched this week.

A person is being sought to take on the traditional role to promote local events in Burnham during this year’s tourist season.

Burnham’s previous town crier passed away four years ago and the position has not been filled since.

Now, though, members of Burnham Town Team, BIARS and the Chamber of Trade are working together on a project to find a local person to fill the role.

“This will be a voluntary post involving appearances on up to five days a week during the season and weekends out of season,” the Town Team’s Gaynor Brown told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“We are keen to see the crier dressed in the style of a local character from the town’s history or to follow a traditional approach of a tri-corned hat with handbell or drum.”

She added: “Expenses will be available to the successful person, who can be male or female, but needs to be aged over 18. A costume will be supplied and made for you.”

The town crier will be invited to shout a list of daily events in four locations across Burnham town centre to promote local events in Burnham. He or she will also be invited to perform at various public events in the town.

“It’s a traditional role that has been sadly missing in recent years and we think the crier will help promote events and boost business in the town.”

The people of Burnham will be invited to choose a winner from the applicants later this year. For more details about how to apply, send an email to bosjobs@talktalk.net
