Oh yez! Oh yez! Search for a new Burnham-On-Sea town crier begins

-

Judging has this week begun in the search to find a new town crier for Burnham-On-Sea.

Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported here earlier this year that a person is being sought to take on the traditional role to promote local events in Burnham during the tourist season.

Burnham’s previous town crier passed away four years ago and the position has not been filled since.

Four people have so far come forward to express an interest in taking on the position.

Among them is local man Alistair Murray, who is pictured here auditioning on Thursday evening (April 18th) at Mr Beans Cafe in the High Street.

The judges included Deputy Mayor Martin Cox plus representatives from Burnham Town Team, Burnham Chamber of Trade and Burnham Community Centre.

The people of Burnham will be invited to pick the winner from the applicants on Bank Holiday Monday, May 6th when a special event is held at Marine Cove gardens on the town’s seafront at mid-day.

“It’s a traditional role that has been sadly missing in recent years and we think the town crier will be great at helping to promote events and boost business,” the Town Team’s Gaynor Brown told Burnham-On-Sea.com. “It is a voluntary post involving appearances on up to five days a week during the season and weekends out of season.”

The town crier will shout a list of daily events in four locations across Burnham town centre to promote local events in Burnham. He or she will also be invited to perform at various public events in the town.
