Olympic distance triathlon completed by over 65 racers in Burnham

A bracing sea swim was among the three activities that more than 65 athletes completed during an Olympic distance triathlon in Burnham-On-Sea on Sunday morning (July 7th).

Triathletes from across the UK competed in the event, which comprised of a 1,500 metre sea swim, 40km bike ride and a 10km run.

After the swim, the athletes cycled to Wedmore, passing through Cheddar, Rooksbridge and Brent Knoll, and then finished the event with a 10km run along the seafront.

The winner, Iain Hindes, completed the event in 2:05:18. Second male overall was Julian Ridgley and third was local competitor Toby Duggan from Middlemoor Water Park, near Burnham.

1st Female Overall was local competitor Celia Miall, second was Elizabeth Pye and Diane Hier was third. The Male 17-29 category was won by Robert Stewart, while the Male 30–39 saw James Kyffin winning.

In the male 40-49 category, James Heal won and 50-59 was Gary Embury while the 60+ winner was Terry Windeatt. Click here for the full results.

Organiser Martin Rogers, from Burnham Swim and Sports Academy, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We had a good number of athletes and perfect weather and sea conditions.”

“Thanks go to those who took part plus the marshalls, organisers and volunteers, including the canoe club and RNLI, for providing sea safety for the event.”
