Burnham-On-Sea MP attacks 'unjustified' £100 billion Trident costs

Burnham-On-Sea's MP has this week hit out at the £100 billion cost of replacing Trident.

Tessa Munt attended a public debate on the issue in Wells where she spoke out against the huge cost of the project.

She said: "I cannot fathom how such a massive expenditure can be justified for a weapon of unprecedented mass destruction that we can never use, especially in such tough times."

"A £100 billion for example would eliminate the UK Budget Deficit for 2012, all of it. The Trident replacement project even has a negative impact on our conventional forces spending. I cannot see how a terrorist organization or even rogue state is deterred by our nuclear force."

"I do not believe this increases our influence around the world, non-nuclear weapon states such as Germany and Japan are a good example of this."

"In the Coalition agreement we have agreed to not make a final decision on a replacement until after the next election in 2015."

"I will continue to argue for the replacement plans to be scrapped and the money used for better ends."
