Community weight loss project in Highbridge raises more than £3,000

-

Over £3,000 has been raised for local community projects by a Highbridge fitness project which rewarded residents who lose weight by giving them money.

A total of 36 people have taken part in the unique three month ‘Pound 4 Pound Community Project’ initiative which came to an end this week.

For every pound of weight that participants lost between September and December, £1 is going straight back into community projects.

An event was held at Highbridge’s Morland Hall on Thursday (December 19th) to mark the project’s conclusion.

Burnham and Highbridge Mayor Martin Cox thanked all those who had participated and congratulated the organisers on the success of the project.

“I appreciate all the hard work that goes into these community events and I am especially pleased to have managed to lose some myself!” he told those present.

Staff from Sedgemoor District Council and Homes in Sedgemoor also supported the project by losing weight, and raised £981 by shifting the pounds!

Organiser Richard Mathews from Sedgemoor Community Partnership said that due to the success of the project he hopes it could become an annual event.

The final amount raised will be over £3,000 which will be used to provide community support and wellbeing courses in 2014.

This project was provided by Sedgemoor Community Partnership and supported by 1610, ProActive and NHS Somerset.
