Proposals to launch a new Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge Youth Town Council have been given the go-ahead this week.

Members of the Town Council voted in favour of setting up the new body during a visit by members of the Somerset Rural Youth Project on Monday.

£200 is being set aside to launch the new Youth Council on a six-month trial and youngsters will be encouraged to have their say about issues affecting local young people.

Town councillor Kate Lawson, pictured, said she is a “huge supporter” of the plan and will be helping to set up the scheme.

She told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I am delighted that the young people of Burnham and Highbridge are to be given a voice.”

“We have groups such as Dreamscheme for younger residents up to 14, but we’d like to see engagement from older children too.”

Cllr Peter Burridge-Clayton, who also supported the plans, added: “There have been several previous attempts at running a Youth Council in Burnham, and the key is keeping the momentum going.”

Further information about how to join the Youth Town Council will be announced later in the year here on Burnham-On-Sea.com.
