Rural areas around Burnham could finally get faster Internet access

Hundreds of thousands of pounds are to be spent on bringing superfast broadband to rural areas around Burnham-On-Sea.

An additional £340,000 has been agreed in principal by a Full Council meeting of Sedgemoor District Council this week to support a regional project that will assist the delivery of superfast broadband in rural areas.

"The investment will go towards the Connecting Devon and Somerset project, which is rolling out high-speed fibre broadband to rural communities and aims to deliver 90% superfast broadband coverage by the end of 2016," council spokeswoman Claire Faun told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

"The contribution is being made alongside other Somerset district councils and the County Council in response to the government releasing an additional £22.75m to the Connecting Devon and Somerset project."

It is estimated that the additional funding from Sedgemoor could potentially deliver superfast broadband to 3,273 additional premises by the end of 2017.
