A lighthouse-themed cake impressed the judges at a charity fundraising baking competition in Burnham-On-Sea on Saturday (April 5th).

Over a dozen bakers competed in the inaugural ‘Great Burnham Cake Off’ at the town’s Baptist Church in College Street, with all funds being raised for Weston Hospicecare.

Dawn Hannett was crowned the overall winner for her cake which was decorated as Burnham’s low lighthouse.

Judge Fiona Cawley, a Burnham based cake supplier and qualified catering manager, volunteered her time to help assess the cakes alongside hospice fundraiser Lynette Preston.

“It was a superb competition and great to see so many wonderful entries. They tasted delicious too!” she said. “Dawn’s lighthouse entry was fantastic and stood out.”

Becki Hooper was also highly commended while the other winners were Barbara Lewis for ‘Best Sponge’ and the ‘Best Junior Baker (Under 16’s)’ award was shared by Jemima and Grace Johnson, pictured below.

The cakes were assessed on their appearance, texture, flavour and moistness.

Burnham’s Mayor Martin Cox and Town Crier Alistair Murray were among the guests who attended the popular event.

“The entries were sold off at the end of Saturday’s event to raise vital funds for Weston Hospicecare,” added Lynette.

“We thank everyone who took part and came along for their support and hope to hold further events in the future in Burnham and surrounding villages.”

Meanwhile, if the event whetted your appetite for cake-making there will be a further chance to show your skills at the ‘Great Burnham Bake Off’ which is scheduled to be held during May’s Burnham Food and Drink Festival, featured here.
