A group of children onboard a coach were left ‘shaken’ but unhurt after it slid into a roadside ditch near Burnham-On-Sea on Monday evening.

Edingworth Road in East Brent was closed by police for several hours after the incident involving a single-decker coach.

Two fire engines from Weston and one from Burnham were sent to the scene amid initial concern for the passengers onboard the coach.

However, a fire spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The coach had slid into a ditch, but fortunately the people onboard were unhurt.”

“We checked on them and also ensured the vehicle was safe before leaving it to be recovered by a commercial firm.”

Some of the children, from Hugh Sexey Middle School, were said to be shocked but were otherwise unhurt and were collected by another coach.

The incident occurred at around 5pm near the junction with the A370. The road was partially closed until mid-evening to allow recovery of the coach by heavy-lifting equipment, as pictured here. Soft road verges after periods of rain have caused many similiar incidents in recent years.
