Record number of coaches visited Burnham over festive period

A record number of coaches visited Burnham-On-Sea over the Christmas period as the town seeks to encourage coach tourism.

New figures out this week show 81 coaches dropped off visitors at Burnham's Pier Street car park between December 23rd and January 2nd - an increase from 32 in the same period a year before.

Les Barber, Destination Manager at Burnham's 'Project Coach' initiative, which is being overseen by community group BIARS with funding from the Town Council, said: "These are brilliant figures. The number of coach visitors has risen two and a half times which is a big jump."

"It's all due to the increase in marketing which Project Coach is currently conducting. We have been working hard on promoting Burnham as a destination to coach operators."

"There's lots more planned this year - including visiting several travel shows over the next couple of months." recently reported that many traders in Burnham have experienced a positive period of Christmas trade.

'Project Coach' was launched last July when a £15,000 grant was given by Burnham and Highbridge Town Council to BIARS (Burnham Information and Rescue Support), which runs Burnham's Tourist Information Centre, to start the initiative.
