Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards perform ‘sea rescue’ on town beach

-

Seafront walkers in Burnham-On-Sea were forgiven for thinking a major sea rescue was underway last night (Wednesday, May 15th).

Several Burnham Coastguards were seen wading out into the sea next to the town’s jetty to reach a person in the water – but fortunately they were just carrying out a training exercise.

Burnham Coastguard Officer Dave Welland told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We carry out water rescue training sessions like this one to test the team’s readiness to perform quick water rescues where the rescuer is in the water for less than three minutes.”

“Each Coastguard has their own flotation device and is attached by a line.”

“Regular sessions like this are important to ensure the team are conditioned for the cold sea temperatures and reduce the likelihood of cold water shock.”
