Two long-serving Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards have been thanked for their work this week as they retire from their roles.

Steve Bird and Nigel Smith have both stepped down after many active years helping to save lives along Burnham’s coastline.

They were both presented with glass tankards on Wednesday evening (December 17th) by current station officer Dave Welland, watched by existing and former crewmembers, as pictured.

Steve, who has retired after 16 years service, eight as station officer, said: “I’ve seen sad times and many positive rescues over the years, but I can look back and say that I helped make a difference. It’s been a great 16 years, but now is the right time to move on and I wish the team well for the future.”

Nigel, who served for 13 years, added: “I’m sorry to be retiring, having enjoyed every minute of it over the years as part of a great crew. I wish the team well.”
