Frustrated Burnham-On-Sea Town Councillors are considering recruiting a new out-of-hours dog warden in a bid to tackle the problem of fouling in the town.

The council’s Town Projects Committee has considered the plan at its latest meeting after several councillors and residents voiced concern at the increasing problem of pavements, paths and the beach being fouled.

Cllr Louise Parkin told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The service that’s currently in place at the moment is clearly not working since the beach and many pavements in Burnham and Highbridge are regularly left in a terrible state.”

“One possibility is is that we take on an extra out-of-hours dog warden to supplement Sedgemoor District Council’s existing service.”

“The dog warden service currently being provided is only in place 9-5pm on weekdays, even though most dogs are walked by their owners early in the morning before work and then again when they get home from work in the evening, so that’s the time when the dog warden is needed – weeknights and the daytime at weekends.”

Cllr Parkin added: “We are investigating whether Sedgemoor could employ the dog warden for us and still oversee the issuing of fines and prosecutions as needed.”

“The Town Council would reimburse Sedgemoor for the running costs of the extra resource – we think it would be money well spent to tackle this awful problem.”

Sedgemoor District Council is currently considering the proposal.
