Thousands of motorists stopped in police drink-driving checks

More than 100 drivers have been arrested for drink driving across the area as police continue to carry out stop checks in the Burnham-On-Sea area.

Avon and Somerset Constabulary has stopped 3,676 drivers across the police force area, with 106 arrested and 36 charged and named.

The stop checks have been carried out as part of the force’s annual Operation Tonic campaign.

Road safety Superintendent Richard Corrigan said: "The figures are encouraging so far because they show that we have been very active across the force, education, enforcing and spreading the word that drink or drug driving is a serious crime that will not be tolerated."

"The figures also seem to indicate that drivers seem to be heeding that message. We want people to carry on being law-abiding and responsible, and help make our roads safer for all, not just at this time but throughout 2015 and beyond."

Police have also said they received 352 calls from people reporting suspected drink-drivers, about the same number as this time last year.

Last year, from December to the end of the New Year holiday, 144 drivers were charged.
