Highbridge Hotel redevelopment work set to begin in November

The long-awaited redevelopment of the eyesore Highbridge Hotel site is on schedule to be start this November, it has been confirmed.

The Chief Executive of the YMCA in Somerset, Martin Hodgson, pictured, has written to town councillors to confirm that the project to create new accommodation for young people and community sports facilities is progressing to plan.

"In the terms of the development, we are currently on schedule. In August we completed tender documentation preparation and transfer arrangement with Derek Mead, owner of the site," he said.

"In September the tender documentation will be issued along with the completion of funding agrements and transfer of land to the YMCA."

"October will see the receipt of the tenders and the award of the contract for the redevelopment. Work will start in November."

Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported here that the YMCA had been awarded £1.1m of funding to overhaul the hotel site by the government's Homes and Community Agency.

The Highbridge Hotel has been derelict for over six years since a huge blaze destroyed much of it in April 2008, followed by several other smaller fires.
