An accident brought down a lamp post across a busy road in Burnham-On-Sea, leaving homes without power and causing a separate car crash on Wednesday (June 25th).

The unusual turn of events began at 3.30pm when a wide lorry struck the lamp post in Berrow Road, sending it crashing across the road.

“A power line attached to it was yanked from the homes on the opposite side of the road, pulling down several fascia boards and concrete panelling – and leaving them without power,” a nearby resident told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“As if that wasn’t dramatic enough, an elderly motorist travelling from Berrow to Burnham who hadn’t seen the incident crashed into the lamp post, leaving him understandably shaken up.”

Police closed the road for several hours and diverted traffic around the scene while crews from Western Power Distribution made the area safe and reconnected the power.

The elderly driver of the car was left shaken but uninjured by the accident. The lorry did not stop at the scene.
