Burnham-On-Sea’s branch of the Royal British Legion looks set to re-open less than a month after it closed following a surge of interest from new volunteers.

Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported last month that the long-running organisation had been disbanded due to a lack of volunteers after a 75 year-history.

Since then, however, a number of residents have come forward to offer their help in getting it restarted.

Burnham Poppy Appeal organiser Gaynor Brown says the county branch of the legion has said 20 legion members are needed as volunteers for the branch to re-started.

“There’s been a really great response over the past week and we now need just two more signatures to re-open the Burnham branch,” she told Burnham-On-Sea.com last night (Monday).

“We have 18 members on the list and are so close. I am determined to see the legion re-opened here once again.”

She added that town councillor Mike Mansfield had offered to become the branch’s new Chairman while Cllr Neville Jones has put his name forward as President, with other volunteers coming forward for the position of treasurer and secretary. Gaynor Brown can be contacted on 01278 238714.
