Burnham-On-Sea’s library is offering young people the chance to boost their CVs with a volunteering opportunity over the school summer holidays.

During July and August each year, over 7,000 children visit Somerset’s libraries to join in with the Summer Reading Challenge, which encourages children aged 4-11 to read six books during the long summer holidays.

Volunteers are needed to work with the library staff to help children improve their literacy skills while having fun.

Volunteers could find themselves involved in any number of things from registering children, to helping to organise story and craft sessions.

As well as boosting their CVs, the young people will receive a T-shirt and other goodies, and be invited to a volunteers’ celebration event at the end of the summer.

The offer is open to anyone aged between 13 – 25 years old who has an interest in books and would like to be involved in encouraging children to get into reading.

Cllr David Hall, Somerset County Council Cabinet member with responsibility for Libraries, said: “This is an excellent opportunity for young people to work within the community, gain experience of helping children and at the same time give a real boost to their CVs to help them with their future careers.”
